[UPDATED] Did you even remember that Google has two music services? You’re not alone. The fact that YouTube Red and Google Play Music compete is confusing, at best. Finally, Google has decided to merge the two to create a new music service.

Google and YouTube will merge their music services to create a new one, YouTube’s head of music, Lyor Cohen reveled during a panel sponsored by the New Music Seminar yesterday in NYC. Cohen said that a combined service would “educate consumers and bring in more subscribers.”
“The important thing is combining YouTube Red and Google Play Music, and having one offering,” Cohen said when asked why YouTube Red isn’t more popular. Rumors of a single Google/YouTube music services began earlier this year when the teams responsible for each were merged in a move designed “deliver the best possible product”.
In a followup statement, a Google spokesperson told The Verge, “Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”
