Adele’s “Hello” earned the #1 ranking as the most-streamed track on digital radio during the 12-month period ending September 30, 2016, according to data compiled by SoundExchange.
The Weeknd also had an impressive achievement, placing 3 – “The Hills” (#4), “Earned It” (#17), and “Can’t Feel My Face” (#20) – on SoundExchange’s list of the Top 20 streamed tracks of the year. With so many songs on the SoundExchange list of the Top 20 streamed tracks of the year, The Weeknd upstaged his national and artistic role model, Canadian rapper Drake.
Drake had one song – “Hotline Bling” (#10) – on the list of the Top 20 most streamed tracks.
The charts are based on data provided to SoundExchange from more than 2,800 digital radio services. The recordings featured were played between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2016. For an artist to qualify as a “Breakout Artist,” that artist must have earned 99% of their total SoundExchange royalties (of all time) in the 12-month period ending September 30, 2016.
