So, it’s official, Spotify have 100 million active users.
The Swedish streaming service announced today (June 20th) that it’s subscriber base has grown to 100 million active users, despite strong competition from major rival Apple Music, which entered the music streaming market in June last year. This was followed by the addition of the high-fidelity streaming platform, Tidal which also entered the streaming market in 2015.
Though despite increased competition, the streaming service still sits way above its rivals in terms of paid subscriber numbers, with more than 30 million people paying $10 a month for their premium tier. But, this doesn’t mean that the streaming platform is not keeping a close eye on Apple Music, who have been growing at an unprecedented rate, racking up more than 15 million users in under a year – this news is definitely keeping Spotify on its toes.
Have Spotify got Apple to thank for such strong growth?
According to Spotify, they’re actually thankful that Apple Music entered the music industry. Jonathan Forster, Vice President of Spotify has recently said in an interview that…
“Since Apple Music started we’ve been growing quicker and adding more users than before. It’s great that Apple is in the game. They are definitely raising the profile of streaming. It is hard to build an industry on your own.”
It then took Spotify approximately 9 months to gain an extra 10 million, an addition of over 1 million paying users per month during 2015 and 2016. This highlights that the rate at which the streaming platform added paying subscribers has accelerated significantly since Apple Music launched. Never in its history has the streaming platform experienced such accelerated growth.
