Today, The MPAA and Radix – Asia’s largest new gTLD applicant, have announced their anti-piracy partnership, according to a report by Torrent Freak.
This is the MPAA’s first anti-piracy partnership with a domain name registry outside the United States.
The MPAA will help Radix prevent pirate sites from using their domain names, and will act as a ‘trusted notifier’ throughout the partnership and will report any copyright-infringing sites. After the sites have been verified as infringing, these domain names will be suspended by the registry.
Sandeep Ramchandani, Business Head of Radix, says…
“We welcome MPAA’s cooperation in helping us prevent intellectual property and copyright violations in our name space. We’re hopeful that our joint actions will not only protect creators from having their works stolen, but also protect Internet users from exposure to malware that is commonly found on sites run by unlicensed operators.”
The MPAA have been actively working on reducing online piracy and are involved in numerous anti-piracy efforts.
It has been made clear that the partnership was a voluntary agreement to target illegal sites and the hope is that the agreement becomes a ”model to be used with other players in the domain name ecosystem and internet intermediaries,” in the future.
