While Tesla’s Model 3 will hit showrooms in 2017, and as rivals Porsche and Audi are working on all-electric cars for release by 2019, the German carmaker appears to have put such cars on the back burner.

Under the radar, Honda has been building semi-autonomous functionality, including forward-collision warning, lane- departure warning and lane-keeping assist.

In January, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it would unveil guidelines to states and manufacturers on self-driving cars by July.

This is the first time that a Silicon Valley company has partnered with a traditional automaker to create a driverless vehicle.

Anonymous sources say the partnership could be announced soon.

Lyft and Volvo are also involved.

The mission is to gather data to make autonomous driving a reality.
