[UPDATED] Spotify has announced that it now has more than 140 million active monthly users. That’s an impressive 40 million year over year increase. With the brief announcement, which came via Twitter, was no exact breakdown of paid vs. free Spotify users. But some simple calculations suggest that it’s twice that of Apple Music’s.

In March of this year, Spotify shared that it has 50 million paid subscribers. The best available stats, which at the time were months old, put total users at well over 100 million.
An educated guess based on prior free to paid user ratios as to how many of Spotify’s current 140 million users are paying would be between 55 and 60 million. The low end of that is more than twice the 27 million paid users that Apple Music announced just last week.
Overall, Spotify has grown by 100 million users in just 3 years.
