If you’re a business owner wanting to advertise your products or services on Facebook but have no idea where and how to begin, then you’ve arrived on the right page. This post will guide you through the five steps of beginning your own Facebook ad campaign. Beware: if you miss one step, you will thwart your success in becoming a Facebook advertiser.

Here are the five essentials steps you need to take to advertise your business on Facebook.

Step 1: Sign Up for a Facebook Account

To be eligible for Facebook advertising, you must first create a Facebook Profile. To create your account, you must provide your full name, email address or phone number, birthday, and gender, as illustrated on the image below.

Once you’ve started your account, don’t neglect to upload a profile picture, to add a cover photo, and to thoroughly fill in your About section.

Step 2: Sign Up for a Facebook Business Page

Now that you’re part of the Facebook community, you’re officially eligible to create a Facebook Business page, an opportunity only available to Facebook users. You need a Facebook Business page to sign up with administrator access for Business Manager, the dashboard from which you can create and manage your Facebook ads.

When creating a business page, keep these tips in mind:

  • Fill out your page in full detail to better acquaint your page visitors to your business
  • Upload a relevant Facebook profile photo to visually represent your brand

You can create your business page from the left side of your news feed by clicking on the “Create Page” button, as illustrated by the image below.

Step 3: Sign Up on Business Manager

Next, you must create a Business Manager account—this is where the magic happens. Business Manager gives you access to Ads Manager where you can create your ads and monitor its performance. It also gives you access to Power Editor where you can edit your ad campaigns.

To create a Business Manager account, you must go to business.facebook.com then click “Create Account.”

Step 4: Establish Your Advertising Objective

After creating your Business Manager account, you might quickly jump to creating an ad. I strongly advise you not to do this.

Before you begin creating ads, you must first establish your advertising objective. Without it, you will be unable to optimize your ads to gain the results that align with your business goals. To determine your advertising objective, ask yourself what you want your ads to do for you: do you want it to urge people to make a purchase, to download your app, to view your video, or to engage with your post?

Here are the objectives Facebook offers on Business Manager:

Awareness

  • Brand Awareness-raise awareness of your business
  • Local Awareness-send people to your brick-and-mortar store
  • Reach-reach as many people as possible

Consideration

  • Traffic-increase traffic to your website
  • Engagement-increase engagement of your Facebook posts
  • App Installs-encourage users to install your app
  • Video Views-encourage users to view your videos
  • Lead Generation-collect your customer’s information

Conversion

  • Conversion-encourage users to take a desired action
  • Product catalog sales-encourage users to buy products from your catalog
  • Store visits-drive users to your brick-and-mortar store

Because the type of ad you want to create depends on your objectives, it is imperative that you establish your objective before you create your ad.

Step 5: Create Ads

Most business owners who have never created an ad start with a Boosted Post. It’s not surprising why: boosted posts are the easiest Facebook ads to create. All you need to do is pay Facebook to promote your post straight from your business page! You don’t need to access Business Manager to do it.

However, if you want to create more sophisticated ads, then you need access to Business Manager. Through Business Manager, you can create ads in the following formats:

  • Carousel
