Concert discovery platform Bandsintown announced the launch of The Bandsintown Studio, a dedicated performance space located at the new Velvet Underground Experience exhibition, which opened on Oct. 10th.
The Velvet Underground Experience is billed as a multi-media art and music exhibition, focusing on the early NYC roots of the pioneering rock band The Velvet Underground. The exhibit looks at the band and its influence on everything from music and fashion, to art and popular culture, set against the backdrop of the band’s early days collaborating with Andy Warhol in NYC in the 1960s.
On Tuesdays and Fridays through the end of the year, the studio will host performances and panels from a range of cultural figures with connections to the band. As well, the venue will also feature an ongoing bi-weekly residency showcasing performances from emerging artists who have been inspired by the Velvet Underground.
The intimate performance space features a capacity of just 100 audience members and the programming for the venue will be handled by Bandsintown.
One of the first artists to be presented in the studio is the Velvet Underground’s John Cale, who will participate in a special moderated Q&A on Thursday, October 11 at 5:00 pm. During the session, Cale will answer questions from his fans and share anecdotes about the band’s impact on the music scene of the era, his relationship with Lou Reed, and other such fare.
Other artists lined up to present at the space include Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Adrian Jean, who will kick off the residency program on October 18th, ahead of the upcoming release of his soul/pop/R&B debut EP titled Caged Bird.
Additional featured speakers include cinematographer Anthony Janelli, filmmaker Jonas Mekas, author, and music critic Anthony de Curtis, director M.M. Serra, director Jonathan Caouette, former Lou Reed manager Tom Sarig, and more to be announced in the coming weeks, Bandsintown said.
The Velvet Underground Experience and the Bandsintown Studio are located at 718 Broadway in Greenwich Village. Admission to The Bandsintown Studio is included in the purchase of a ticket to The Velvet Underground Experience and subject to capacity.
