One of the most consistent and frankly fair accusations levelled at software when compared with analogue gear is that it fails to inject a sense of character to sounds. Sending audio through another piece of solid equipment imbues it with the hallmarks of said equipment and naturally, that is hard to emulate digitally. Software companies have long been preoccupied with trying to redress this however, and as our expert instructor Ben Medcalf explains, they are slowly catching up. As such we asked him to take a quick look at what can be done with three emulations of vintage EQs native to Logic Pro. Ben teaches music production and mixing at Point Blank London, both integral parts of our BA (Hons) degree programmes, validated by Middlesex University. Watch the video below.
The first emulation Ben looks at is the Consol EQ based on the classic Neve 1073 unit, before turning to the Graphic EQ modelled on the API 560. Finally, he plays with the Tube EQ which is a composite of two Pultec EQs. the focus here is on live instrumentation but they can be used with any sounds to add quite intangible qualities like warmth, body and crispness. They may not quite reach the levels of their analogue counterparts but as a free resource for Logic owners they are very effective.
We offer a range of music production courses here at Point Blank London where Ben teaches, the most comprehensive of which is our three-year BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering. The first term of our brand new BA (Hons) in Music Production and DJ Practice launches in a matter of weeks too. If you’d like to know more, why not come along to our upcoming open day where you can get a feel for the school and ask any questions you might have. If you can’t make that, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
