Despite rave reviews, Lady Gaga was beaten badly by Tom Hardy, in what proved to be the biggest box office weekend for October in history with the debut of Sony’s ‘Venom’ and Warner Bros. ‘A Star Is Born.’
Sony’s super hero Venom, starring Tom Hardy, took the #1 spot both in the U.S., and abroad, earning an estimated $80.0M at home and $205.2M worldwide for its debut weekend. Good business any time of the year, but record breaking box office take for October, easily besting the previous record holder Gravity, which earned $55.7 million on its debut weekend in 2013.
Also enjoying a big opening weekend was the music heavy A Star Is Born which featured Lady Gaga in her first role in a major feature film along with co-star and director Bradley Cooper. A remake of the classic 1937 drama, Star earned an estimated $41.2M from North American theaters and $55.2M worldwide according to estimates compiled by comScore.
Also enjoying a robust opening weekend was the Hong Kong-made action movie Project Gutenberg. Starring Aaron Kwok, Zhang Jingchu, and Chow Yun-fat, the film delves into the shadowy world of art and currency forgery. Project Gutenberg opened in 6 territories this weekend and generated an estimated $38.0M in revenue, and most of it likely with real, instead of counterfeit money.
