Tyler Perry proved that his shopworn ‘Madea’ character is still a box office draw as “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” debuted in North America to an estimated $21.6M, according to figures compiled by comScore.
The Lionsgate-released film features Perry portraying the titular character Madea, an elderly black woman who first appeared on screen in 2005 in “Diary of a mad black woman” and has since appeared in 11 other Perry movies in the intervening years.
“Boo 2” a direct sequel to last year’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” met studio expectations for its opening weekend and nearly recouped its estimated $21.7 million production budget.
Warner Bros. “Geostorm” held the #2 spot over the weekend, both in international markets and in the U.S., clearing $49.7M over the weekend.
The preposterous espionage adventure “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” opened in China over the weekend, adding $51.7M to its worldwide cumulative box office of $344.8m.
