Spotify’s new $14.99 USD family plan now matches the offerings of its rivals Apple Music and Google Play, and today’s roll out is virtually global. But it doesn’t take a math wiz to realize that deals like this can severally cut into the dollars paid to creators and labels.

Spotify has expanded its family plan to 6 premium users for $14.99 USD (£14.99 UK, €14.99 NL) . That’s up from 2 users for the same price; and now matches family deals offered for months by Apple Music and Google Play.
While policing of what constitutes a family member is often lax, this deal, and others like it, are designed to lure more mainstream users to pay for music subscriptions. More paying users means a big pot of cash distributed to rights holders, music streamers rioghtly argue. But as with ad supported streaming, doscounts also lower the overall per stream rate paid to creators and labels. With the new Spotify Family Plan, listeners get:
-
Separate accounts – Everyone gets their own account with their own playlists, saved music and personal recommendations.
-
Premium for everyone – Everyone on the plan gets the full Spotify Premium experience. Listen offline to more than 30 million songs – any song, anytime, on any device. No restrictions or ads.
-
All collected on a single bill
Spotify’s new family plan is available globally, except in Canada, starting today.
