It’s well-known in the world of music production that a carefully placed vocal hook on a track can transform a good song into an unforgettable one. There are lots of different ways you can use vox in a track and the way you arrange and manipulate them can sometimes make all the difference.
In our latest video tutorial, Risa T, a producer and Point Blank graduate, uses the stems from L.A. DJ/producer Hoodboi’s ‘Glide‘ remix competition to explore some techniques you can use when working with vocals. Although we specialise in teaching Music Production & Sound Engineering here at Point Blank we also offer courses in Singing & Songwriting and encourage collaboration between the two. Watch the video and see our roundup of the tips featured in the video below.
Making layers of your stems is a great way to create a wider sound with your vocals. This, paired with pitching and panning your layers can produce a much more dynamic, fuller overall sound. Before layering your samples making vocal chops of key parts in the song can really help with padding out the track and creating a new hook. These chops can be reversed, stretched, and more and can be used repeatedly throughout your track to give it a more professional touch. Using delays is another useful tool for adding texture to your song, especially if you have sections in your track which are predominantly bass, drums, and vox.
