Deadpool Dethrones Avengers

image from celebrityaccess.comAfter dominating movie box offices worldwide for three weeks, Marvel-Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” has been dethroned by yet another Marvel-Disney movie, “Deadpool 2.”

Starring Ryan Reynolds in the lead, with James Brolin cast as the villainous Cable, the film was directed by David Leitch, who made his directorial debut in 2014 with the first “John Wick” before he helmed the first installment of the “Deadpool” series later that year.

“Deadpool 2” had an impressive opening weekend, debuting to a cool $125.0M in North America and $301.3M worldwide according to estimates compiled by comScore, on the back of an estimated $110 million production budget. The results of the movie’s weekend debut are even more impressive when you consider that its audience was more limited than other Marvel-Disney entries due to its R rating.

Meanwhile, “Avengers” continued its own strong performance and while domestic box office dwindled to just $28.7M this weekend, the movie still managed to generate $113.1M worldwide, pushing its cumulative revenue north of $1.8 billion.

Rounding out the top 3 in worldwide revenue was the Chinese film “How Long Will I Love U” which debuted to a $36.3m opening in just three territories. In North American theaters, Paramount’s romantic comedy “Book Club” easily recouped its estimated 10m production budget after it debuted to a $12.5M opening weekend.
