“Black Panther” had an impressive debut weekend, chalking up $218 million at 4,020 North American theaters over the long President’s Day weekend and an astonishing $361 million worldwide, according to estimates compiled by comScore.
Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” also broke the record for the largest Presidents Day weekend opening, topping 2016’s the $152 million that “Deadpool” scared up in 2016. “Black Panther” also recorded the single largest Thursday preview with 25.2 million, the second largest preview gross for any of the Marvel films.
“Disney’s presentation of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ pounced on the box office around the world taking in $361 million to mark the fifteenth highest global opening weekend of all-time and with China, Japan and Russia yet to come the potential future revenue is literally off the charts. Internationally, the hit superhero film opened at number one in almost all territories and set new box office records in North America including the fifth biggest opening weekend of all-time. Notably ‘Detective Chinatown 2,” the Chinese comedy-mystery buddy film had a spectacular weekend drawing $155.7 million for this follow up to the 2015 popular first film in the series,” said comScore’s Paul Dergarabedian.
