Actress, singer, songwriter, and activist, Olivia Newton-John, died on Monday (Aug. 8) at age 73.
The news was announced on her official Facebook page via Newton-John’s husband, John Easterling.
“Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” the post says. “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.”
Newton-John is universally known for her starring role as Sandy alongside John Travolta in the 1978 film Grease. Her music career included five No. 1 hits, such as 1981’s iconic “Physical,” and two No. 1 albums, If You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974) and Have You Never Been Mellow (1975).
Newton-John made waves as a pop country artist in the ’70s. She notched seven top 10 hits such as “Let Me Be There,” “If You Love Me (Let Me Know),” “I Honestly Love You,” and “Come on Over.” She was named CMA Vocalist of the Year and took home the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance (“Let Me Be There”) in 1974.
