Every year industry professionals, artists both aspiring and established, as well as hoards of electronic music lovers descend on Amsterdam for the biggest festival of its kind in the world: Amsterdam Dance Event. The programme is split loosely into a conference and a festival, one side dominated by lectures, panel discussions and networking events, the other by parties showcasing the best DJs, promoters and live performers on the global dance music scene. The scale is frankly staggering, and if you’re in Amsterdam right now or planning on heading over, it’s likely that you’re a little overwhelmed. Never fear, we’ve trawled through the extensive programme to come up with a list of the top five events in both of ADE’s two strands. Read on to see our top five talks and parties.
ADE Conference
The Origin of Gatherings: Why We Do What We Do – ADE Pro / ADE Green
A discussion on the history of parties and gathering, featuring representatives from Arcadia, Garbicz and more. The panel will explore the changing reasons people engage in parties on all levels, and which way to take their respective interests amid the ever-increasing popularity of the scene.
Native Sessions: 25 Years of Masters at Work – ADE Sound Lab
Masters of Work are Kenny Dope and Lil Louie Vega, who over 25 years of collaboration have carved out their unique blend of house, latin music and hip-hop, and inspired generations of musicians and dancers with their unmistakable soul. In this talk with Tony Nwachukwu, hear two undisputed bedrocks of house music discuss their long history.
Defiant On The Dance Floor: How Nightlife Empowered the LGBTQ+ Community (and Vice-Versa) – ADE Pro / ADE Green
It’s all-too-often forgotten that house music, and, by extension, our entire culture is borne of the LGBTQ+ community. Dance music as we know it rooted in that scene, and it should be shouted about far more. Bogomir Doringer, Honey Dijon, Loren Granich and Peter van Vught talk through the advances wrought through music, and more importantly, everything music and culture has gained from LGBTQ+ struggle and resistance since the Stonewall riots of 1969.
Roland Masterclasses with A Guy Called Gerald – ADE Soundlab
Roland present three new products over three days with some of the worlds leading artists on demo duty. Our pick of the bunch is A Guy Called Gerald, who everyone knows for his Haçienda classic ‘Voodoo Ray’. Less well known is that he also made one of the best Jungle albums of all time in ‘Black Secret Technology’, so you know the man’s a wizard with the machines.
Lecture: Breaking Down The Wall: Entering the Chinese underground scenes by Merlijn Poolman – ADE Pro
Merlijn Poolman gives a lecture on the truly underground scenes bubbling away in China, and how and what to get into. It’s part of a stellar programme focused on China on the Sunday, which we think sums up the inquisitive and insightful nature of ADE as a whole.
ADE Festival
RADION Saturday | Resident Advisor Night
Along with De School, RADION is probably Amsterdam’s best big club, and on Saturday night it plays host to what is likely the festival’s best party. The list of DJs is undeniably amazing. Ben UFO, DJ Nobu, Umfang, Mister Saturday Night, Jayda G… Need we say more?
ZeeZout x Dimensions ADE 2017 // Thursday
Hunee B2B Call Super brings together two of the best selectors for a quite unexpected meeting of styles. Throw in Mike Servito and Courtesy and you’ve got a broad church of the cutting edge.
NGHTDVSN & LittleBig Present: Teleport ADE
With Clark and Nathan Fake playing live, you can expect the unexpected for this one. With Jon Hopkins donning the decks too, among a host of other great acts, this is a line-up dripping with class.
Everlasting BAR Love
Just three DJs over seven hours allows them time to craft the kind of journey that sticks in the memory for years. In Trevor Jackson and Red Light Radio’s Orpheu The Wizard they’ve nabbed two of the world’s finest selectors. Jackson plays a special ‘Metal Dance’ set after his compilations of the same name, so prepare for some mad music from the fringes of EBM, Krautrock, Dub and Post-Punk.
