K-pop dominated the YouTube Music harts with BTS breaking records and Blackpink taking over the #1 spot on the Global Top Songs chart, Muse and Soundgarden also saw a spike in views following last week’s first black hole photo, and Lil Nas X continues his ride with the “Old Town Road” remix.
YouTube Music Charts & Trends – April 16, 2019
BTS set a new all-time debut record
K-pop heavyweights BTS have set a new all time record for biggest debut in YouTube history, with their BTS (방탄소년단) ‘작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy With Luv) feat. Halsey’ Official MV earning a staggering 74.6 million views in its first 24 hours. The video is also the fastest ever to reach 100M views on the platform, hitting the milestone in under two days. “Boy with Love” is currently the #1 video on the US Trending chart.
Blackpink dominate the charts
Blackpink’s “Kill This Love” has taken over the top slot of the Global Top Songs chart, ending Daddy Yankee and Snow’s “Con Calma” six week run at #1. Fueled by their record setting music video and a series of performance clips, “Kill This Love” earned over 230M views this chart week — setting a new global record for most views in a single charting week since the YouTube charts first launch in 2016.
The song appears in the Top Songs charts in over 50 countries and territories this week, including South Korea (#1), Japan (#1), Australia (#1), Russia (#3), the United Kingdom (#4), the United States (#5) and Brazil (#5). Blackpink are currently #1 on the Global Top Artists chart, and land four additional songs on the Global Top Songs chart: “DDU-DU DDU-DU” (#21), “Don’t Know What to Do” (#23), “BOOMBAYAH” (#75), and “As If It’s Your Last” (#81).
Muse and Soundgarden see supermassive spikes in views
Following last week’s news of the first ever photo of a black hole, daily views of the official video for Soundgarden’s aptly-titled “Black Hole Sun” earned a 68% 4/10 when compared to the video’s prior daily average views in 2019, while Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” experienced a spike of 320%.
Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus ride on
Lil Nas X once again lands the top spot on the US Top Songs chart, with his original take and Billy Ray Cyrus remix of “Old Town Road” combining for 52.4M views in the US alone over the charting period. The song lands the #1 slot in six additional countries Top Songs chart this week, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa and the #3 spot on the Global Top Songs chart.
The success of the “Old Town Road” remix has coincided with an uptick in views of other genre-bending, country-infused duets throughout the charts week, including Nelly and Tim McGraw’s “Over and Over Again,” Young Thug and Millie Go Lightly’s “Family Don’t Matter” and Buck 22 and Billy Cyrus’s “Achy Breaky 2.”
Jonas Brothers comeback continues
The second track in the Jonas Brothers’ comeback, “Cool” debuts at #3 on the US Top Music Videos chart and #15 on the Global Top Music Videos chart. “Sucker” is currently #49 on the US Top Songs chart while the Jonas Brothers re-enter the Global Top Artists chart at #92.
Fans celebrate the music of Kurt Cobain
Fans paid tribute to the late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain’s music last week on the 25th anniversary of his tragic death, leading to a 95% daily spike on views on April 5th compared to the group’s prior 2019 daily average.

Other notable debuts and climbers on the US Top Songs chart include Sam Smith and Normani’s “Dancing With A Stranger” (climbs from #34 to #18), Pedro Capó and Farruko’s “Calma” remix (climbs from #41 to #20), Khalid’s “Talk” (climbs from #74 to #24), Aventura’s “Immortal” (debuts at #29), Nicky Jam and Ozuna’s “Te Robaré” (debuts at #38), Kehlani’s “Nights Like This” featuring Ty Dolla $ign (debuts at #55), Jennifer Lopez’s “Medicine” featuring French Montana (debuts at #57), and Rich The Kid’s “For Keeps” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again (debuts at #72).
